Rule Your Pool

Swim Across America (w/ Rob Butcher)

Episode Summary

There has been a hole in our hearts at Orenda for the past week. We lost an employee to cancer. Kelly was diagnosed only about 7 or 8 weeks prior to her passing away. We felt it appropriate to introduce a charity that we are personally involved in: Swim Across America. Today's episode is with the CEO of Swim Across America, Rob Butcher. He explains what they do and how you can make a difference in cutting-edge research for experimental cancer treatments nationwide. As a bonus, Eric challenges the Rule Your Pool audience to a fundraising target. Not one penny goes to Orenda, it all goes to SAA. If the fundraising target is met, Jarred himself will be swimming in the lake with Eric and Miguel. And we will be swimming on your behalf. But of course, you're welcome to join us. 00:00 - Intro

01:23 -  Introducing Rob Butcher, the CEO of Swim Across America

02:02 - Who is Swim Across America? 2022 is the 35th anniversary of SAA.

05:52 - The boat for the original swim sank, and it's still on the bottom of the Long Island sound.

10:06 - Fighting cancer is personal to Rob.

12:32 - The first Intermission in RYP Podcast history. We hereby invite you to join our team.

16:26 - The energy of a SAA swim is incredible.

19:29 - When SAA makes a gift to a cancer institution or hospital, SAA has a scientific and medical board who helps decide where best to allocate those funds. In particular, patient research for experimental, cutting edge treatments.

29:39 - Olympic swimmers show up at almost every swim, and they volunteer their time to be there. In fact, they pay to swim and help raise money.

31:49 - We lost an employee last week, Kelly. We want to honor her and she is already sorely missed. She kept our business running and made sure we were able to ship on time, even during the supply chain chaos of COVID. By the time she found out she had cancer, it was too late. It had already spread everywhere.

36:10 - SAA is directly in our industry. The pool industry is predicated on the fact that people need to learn how to swim. It's a life skill.

37:26 - Not many people in the industry were competitive swimmers. But you don't have to be a swimmer to be a part of this. You can volunteer, donate, and tell others about it. We'll swim on your behalf.
